Flights and visas
Do we need an Indian visa?
If you aren’t an Indian national, you can apply for an e-visa in your own country. How long a visa application takes depends on where you’re applying, so do please check as soon as you can.
How can we get there?
Nearest local airports are New Goa International (GOX) in Mopa (45 minutes by car) served by TUI and Air India directly from the UK – and also by Qatar and Oman Air with stopovers. Goa International (GOI) is also a possibility, it’s in Dabolim (a couple of hours by car).
Please make arrangements with Rohan before your arrival – he can pick up six passengers and luggage (he’ll charge you locally for this). When you arrive, please send him a WhatsApp message (or text) once you’ve collected your luggage and he’ll drive to the arrivals area to pick you up. If you’re in a bigger group (over six people) Rohan can arrange for an additional vehicle and driver from one of our local taxi operators.
Car/Driver
What do we need to know about driving around and to and from the airport?
We have our own seven-seater Toyota Innova which Rohan can use to collect you from the airport. Please make arrangements with Rohan before your arrival. When you arrive, please send him a WhatsApp message or text once you’ve collected your luggage and he’ll drive to the arrivals area to pick you up. If you’re in a bigger group (over six people) Rohan can arrange for an additional vehicle and driver from one of our local taxi operators. The cost for the extra car is roughly Rs 3,500 one way (about USD45).
You’re welcome to use our Toyota Innova during your stay. There’s a small tariff for this (please ask Rohan details) along with whatever petrol you use.
Internet/Mobiles
Is there an internet connection at the house?
Yes, we have high-speed fibre optic broadband and wi-fi connectivity.
What do I need to know about using mobiles in India?
Roaming charges tend to be high (at about £6/day for most UK networks) in India. A good alternative is to buy a pre-paid SIM card when you arrive in India. These can be topped up easily in Mandrem or other nearby towns. Jio and VI seem to work best at the beach house.
Security
Is the house and surrounding area safe?
Yes. Most of our hamlet consists of Sawant families, so security shouldn’t be a problem. While you’re staying, Mahadev or Subhash will sleep in the store room at the back of the house for added security. There are also room safes in each bedroom and luxury tent.
Electricity, air-conditioning and water
What’s the power supply and utilities situation and are there air-conditioners?
The supply is good and reliable. The house has a 5-kilowatt solar system backed up with three-phase power supply from the Maharashtra grid. This capacity allows for all the lights and electrical appliances like fans, fridges and washing machine. The air-conditioning units (in all bedrooms, living and dining area) work well and are backed up, in the event of an occasional power cut, by our own a generator (100 yards from the house).
We have our own water tank and tower, so there’s plenty of water and there’s good pressure for showers. Our water system uses water filtration.
Money
Are there banks, ATMs and currency exchanges?
Most of the nearby towns and villages have ATMs. We’ve found the most reliable ATM for foreign debit and credit cards is HDFC Bank. Other private banks are okay, like Axis, ICICI, Yes Bank and the State Bank of India.
You may want to bring some larger denomination US-dollar bills ($20 and $100 notes), as these are often accepted in shops and markets. Parsekar’s, our favourite small grocery in Mandrem, will exchange larger bills within one rupee of the inter-bank rate.
Provisioning
Do we need to get food and drink for our stay at the house?
Ideally, yes. It’s good to sort this out before you arrive, if you can. We can send you a list of what’s available at the local supermarket, including the usual non-perishables and fresh dairy such as cheese (mozzarella and feta), muesli/granola and kombucha! There are fruit and veg stalls near the house. There’s a local wine shop with some imported wines and spirits, but mostly local brands (for a better selection you need to go to Tom’s Wine & Liquor in Panjim).
Rohan can then shop before you arrive. Basics like milk, bread, eggs and fruit can be got in the village.
Health
Is there a doctor or medical facility nearby?
Yes. There’s an English-speaking doctor at a clinic in Redi village. The nearest hospital is in Mapusa. Rohan can book an appointment.
Guide Books
Should we get a guidebook?
You don’t have to have one, but it can be a handy nice-to-have. There are masses of India guides out there. We really like Love Goa by Fiona Caulfield.
